The Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has announced the appointment of Andréa Maechler as its new deputy general manager for a five-year term, effective 1 September 2023. Maechler will succeed Luiz Awazu Pereira da Silva when he retires at end-August this year.
Maechler is currently a member of the governing board of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), a position to which she was appointed in 2015. In addition to that role, she is also the head of Department for Money Market and Foreign Exchange, Asset Management, Banking Operations and Information Technology. She is also currently chair of the Global Foreign Exchange Committee.
Prior to joining the SNB, she was deputy division chief in the global markets analysis division of the International Monetary Fund. She has worked at other international organisations, including the European Systemic Risk Board and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
“I am delighted that Andréa Maechler will be joining the BIS as its new deputy general manager,” says François Villeroy de Galhau, chair of the BIS Board of Directors. “Her wide-ranging experience at the Swiss National Bank and at international organisations will be a huge asset for the BIS. She is uniquely qualified to work with the general manager in leading the BIS.”
BIS General Manager Agustín Carstens adds,”Ms Maechler’s knowledge and broad experience will be a great asset to the bank. She has been an active member of BIS committees and meetings and a trusted colleague within the central banking community. I look forward to welcoming her to the BIS senior management team.”
